The Cities 4.0 project is the effort of a consortium of 4 European innovation ecosystems to contribute to key elements of the European Climate policy as reflected in the EU Green Deal, the ‘Fit for 55’ package adopted on 14 July 2021. Cities 4.0 will look in particular at the regional and local translation of this package through the proposed European Union’s Mission 100 Climate Neutral and Smart Cities by 2030 (henceforward EU Mission), introduced in September 2021.
All four cities partnering in this project, Brainport Eindhoven/Helmond, Leuven, Turku and Bologna, have been selected as members of the Mission and thus they aim at reaching climate neutrality by 2030. In this context, the Cities 4.0 project is an opportunity to experiment and innovate thanks to knowledge sharing, networking and interconnection.
Cities 4.0 is funded by the European Union. Views and opinions expressed are, however, those of the author(s) only and do not necessarily reflect those of the European Union or EISMEA. Neither the European Union nor the granting authority can be held responsible for them.
Project partners
The activities of the European Cities 4.0 project aim to create new networks and synergies between innovation ecosystems towards climate neutrality.
The Cities 4.0 consortium comprises research institutes and non-academic innovative actors who represent excellence in the fields of Science, Urban Innovation, Environment and High Tech.
A consortium of 5 partners creates this multi-disciplinary partnership and works together to help their 4 cities achieve climate neutrality.
Brainport Development Eindhoven, the project coordinator, is leading the partnership to put together all the efforts and capacities of each partner in order to reach our goal.
Leuven Mindgate and its important role in the Leuven Innovation Region will contribute to the project by mapping the key players that will develop an international Joint Climate Action Plan.
Turku Science Park Ltd. will use their scientific expertise to make a deep analysis of every partner innovation ecosystem. Thanks to this analysis, the partner will come up with the business opportunities arising due to the climate neutrality objective.
The Fondazione Innovazione Urbana from Bologna will be in charge of the communication and dissemination of the project. Moreover, the Fondazione will be responsible for the engagement of the citizens.
ESTI, the Ecosystem Thinking Institute, and its long experience in open innovation practices will help every partner with their tools and initiatives that will be customized to link the stakeholders and find coordinated solutions related to climate neutrality.
